What is the difference in a Single-Phase and a Three-Phase power supply for an Ingersoll Rand Reciprocating Compressor?

The difference between a Single Phase and a Three Phase AC power supply for an Ingersoll Rand Reciprocating Compressor is the Single Phase (1-Phase or 1PH) has less power, requiring two wires and a ground, while the Three Phase (3-Phase or 3PH) requires more, including three or four wires. 

A Single Phase power supply is known as “residential voltage” since it is used in most homes. The common voltage for a Single Phase power starts at 230V for our Ingersoll Rand Reciprocating Compressors.

A Three Phase power supply is known as “commercial or industrial voltage” since it is used in most business applications.  Three Phase power has several common voltages for our Ingersoll Rand Reciprocating Compressors, including: 200/208 Volts, 230 Volts, 460/480 Volts and 575 Volts.

 

 

Customers should be sure they select an air compressor that matches up to the incoming AC power service (voltage/phase) supplied by their electrical utility provider.

 

NOTE: It is important to note the use of undersized wire results in low voltage and high amperes, and nuisance tripping of over-load relays or blown fuses.

CONSIDERATIONS: If other electrical equipment is connected to the same circuit, the total electrical load MUST be considered when selecting the proper wire sizes.
