Ingersoll Rand Compressors: API-Compliant, Plug-and-Play Solution for a Oman's Refinery

Project Details

A major Oil and Gas company, with over 40 years of experience in designing, building, and operating both onshore and offshore facilities worldwide, sought reliable and efficient compressors to support one of its large-scale projects. Known for its expertise in executing complex Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) initiatives, the company required a dependable partner to ensure seamless support throughout every phase for peace of mind.

The challenge involved a $2 billion contract in southern Oman, centered on developing a strategic refinery occupying over 2,000 acres with a refining capacity of approximately 230,000 barrels of oil per day. This project stands as a symbol of innovation and progress, integrating advanced engineering, environmental sustainability, and community development.

The refinery features impressive engineering accomplishments, including modular auxiliary boiler packages weighing over 550 tons and insulated steel tanks designed to minimize heat loss and CO2 emissions. A 180-meter-tall flare was also installed to reduce environmental impact. Beyond its technical achievements, the refinery contributes significantly to Oman’s economy and local community, delivering substantial economic and social benefits.

The Challenge

Due to the complexity and critical nature of the project, our Oil & Gas client required a vendor capable of offering not only high-quality, reliable products but also extensive expertise in managing complex undertakings under demanding technical and environmental conditions. This need led them to choose Ingersoll Rand as their trusted partner to supply the specialized compressors for their compression needs in their air separation plant within the new refinery.

Refineries impose strict requirements on compressors, including compliance with industry standards such as API (American Petroleum Institute) specifications to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and safety. Furthermore, compressors must operate with minimal noise and vibration to safeguard worker safety and preserve equipment integrity. These systems are also required to meet stringent additional safety regulations due to the inherently high-risk environment of refinery operations. Providing a Tailored Solution

Our Oil & Gas customer, having successfully collaborated with us on various projects in the past, chose to trust us once again, confident in our reliability and proven track record of delivering excellent performance in previous refinery projects.

The Ingersoll Rand expert team designed customized skids, consisting of a pair of Ingersoll Rand MSG® TURBO-AIR NX12000 centrifugal compressor units (3 stages) - Power: 1.6 MW, designed as per API 672 standard. Each package also came equipped with auxiliary equipment such as an API 614 lube oil system with a TEMA C oil cooler, external shell & tube TEMA R aftercooler, self-cleaning pulse jet air intake filter, and noise enclosure.

Each unit was meticulously assembled and tested at cutting-edge manufacturing facilities to ensure optimal performance. After testing, the packages were disassembled for transport and carefully reassembled at the plant. The final result was a custom-engineered centrifugal compressed air system, specifically designed to meet the unique performance, safety, efficiency, and reliability requirements of the air separation facility.
